Morse Code Explained and Morse Simulator

Overview

Morse code was invented in 1835 by Samuel Morse. The Morse Code encodes text and numbers into beeps which can be transmitted via radio or more likely in the maritime environment via light. There has been much discussion at an international level concerning the relevance of Morse Code as a subject, particularly given the ready availability of more modern communication systems.

Despite this Merchant Navy Deck Officers require to complete a signals course approved by the U.K by Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Successful completion of a signals course results in the award of a ‘Signals Certificate’ which is valid for a period of 3 years. After this 3 year period Deck Officers are required to complete another MCA signals course and exam in order to receive either a Chief Mate or Master Certificate of Competency. Amongst other subjects the signals examination includes tests on the Deck Officers ability to both send and receive Morse Code.
